Peace talks have resumed between Hamas and Israel with Egypt playing the mediator role. This is a historic time as Israel has consistently claimed that it refuses to hold supposed “peace” talks with this military government which has taken over Gaza since January 2006.
Now with Egypt as mediator, at 6:00am on Thursday June 19th, 2008, a truce will take effect between Israel and Hamas militants. This is all well and good and once again, looks pretty on paper and to the broadcasting networks all over the world. However, as today showed, Hamas factions barraged the already Qassam torn town of Sderot with 29 rockets, one directly hitting a house, leaving 10 victims suffering from shock and a woman lightly injured in the leg.

If this is how Hamas shows its military might the last few hours between a truce, the lesson that Israel has long learned will one again show its true colors. During this “truce”, it will not be peaceful except superficially. Instead, these radical factions will use this time to regroup, rearm and reignite their passionate hatred towards the state of Israel. If Israel’s IDF is smart, they will also take this time to do the same.

As they say...know thy enemy. We have known our enemy for too long; it’s time to act accordingly. No more of this asking for the world’s permission from the United States and the United Nations to protect our citizens. Every country is entitled to protect its inhabitants and Israel should not be made an exception. Every “truce” and every “UN sanction” is only prolonging the inevitable. As the general consensus is when asking Israelis, it’s no longer a matter of “if” there will be a war – but instead “when” there will be a war.
I for one, like to see both sides of the story. Not all Palestinians, especially those who are located in Gaza due to either choice or circumstances, are sending these rockets over. In fact, my heart goes out to those innocent Gazans who are just innocent bystanders and everyone is losing on both sides when the radical factions send rockets and the IDF responds.
True, the IDF has also made its own mistakes and the Israeli public is also very critical of its own army, but the opinion still remains that Israel as a country should be allowed to protect its own citizens and not have to beg for permission to do so from the USA or UN.
We all know that money oils that great wheel of politics but amassing these paper piles of ”peace talks” does nothing to help both sides. Both Israel and Hamas must recognize each other - I am in support of a 2 state solution, as long as each other do not continue the bloodshed.
Correct yourself Jessi. Don't call Hamas a terrorist Organization. we don't consider it as a terrorist organization only because Israel and US think so. whatever they are but Palestine ppl have elected them and they are the Palestinian representative. US and any other organization has no right to say so. If Hamas is a terrorist organization, then Israel is the bigger one. either you accept this for both or for none. choice is yours.
I personally do not care what the USA or the UN broadly classify Hamas as - but I personally invite you to come see first hand how this ”peaceful” organization clearly demonstrates their tactics using Qassams everyday against my neighbors.
If there is truly to be any peace, it must begin within each own’s government. Again, not every Palestinian is a member or even supports Hamas. That would be like saying that every Israeli supports Ehud Olmert. It’s all a matter of personal choice as you have stated.
Even though as a citizen, I wish for peace as well...what you say has a lot of truth in it.
What’s funny is how many different opinions there are even within the Israelis themselves.
Check out this interesting poll done http://www.imra.org.il/story.php3?id=39610 on the attitudes jointly between Palestinians and Israelis about the Golan Heights, 2 state solution, etc.
I think that until the political unrest settles down within our own government, how in the world besides reacting to the agression shown by Hamas, are we going to have peace if we don’t have it within our own ranks first?
Israel and Hamas know both stand no chance of truce while killing goes on. This clash between two is on going forever, as Islam does not allow the surrender of a hand-span of land occupied. In 1948, Britain handed over Palestine to European Jews was not theirs to give. They thought Israel could exhaust its powers in never-ending wars will ensure Western interests.
